A daybed is a versatile piece of furniture that serves as both a sofa and a bed, making it a popular choice for guest rooms, studios, and home offices. However, choosing the right bedding for a daybed can be challenging since it requires a different approach than traditional bed bedding. While you can certainly use standard twin size bedding on a daybed, we have found that using a set that is specifically designed for daybeds works much better and solves several common issues that you may encounter.
Problem #1- Overhang
When you place a standard twin size quilt or comforter atop a daybed you will run into a little problem pretty quickly. What do you do with the excess bedding? For a normal twin bed, the excess drapes down on either side causing no problems. But for a day bed, there is only one side to handle the overhang. So do you just tuck in the excess under the mattress? And what about the side to side overhang? Yes, you can just tuck all of this in but it's not the best solution. A typical twin size quilt or comforter really offers a little too much coverage for the surface of a daybed.
A daybed set generally comes with a smaller sized quilt or comforter that is designed to cover the top surface of the mattress and hang over the edge of the front only. It's large enough to use for sleeping, but not so large it creates a lot of excess bulk when the bed is being used sofa style. So while a daybed set is not technically required for a daybed, it solves the problem of overhang. And that makes your life easier, and allows you to enjoy the daybed as a sitting area during the day and as a regular bed at night. (Without all the lumps from excess bedding tucked under the mattress!)
Problem #2 - The Bedskirt
Here is another problem that quickly presents itself when using regular bedding on a daybed. If you use a regular bedskirt on a daybed, the open side is in the wrong place. Normally, a bedskirt covers 3 sides of the bed, hiding what is underneath the bed and creating a pretty finish to the floor. For a daybed, the 3 sides that need covering are the two ends plus the front. A daybed skirt is designed to cover the front and both ends of the bed, while leaving the back open. A simple difference, but it makes all the difference. Also, you will need a bedskirt that is designed with split corners to accommodate the frame of the bed. Not all standard bedskirts will be designed with this feature, but choosing an ensemble that is specifically designed for daybeds will certainly check this box.
Problem #3- Pillow Shams
With a standard twin size bedding set, you will have one pillow sham. That is going to look pretty skimpy on your daybed. For a nice display on a daybed, you'll want 3 standard size shams, or 2 king size shams. Plus a few toss pillows to enhance the comfort and plush look. A daybed set will generally include enough pillow shams to create a cute display, and maybe even a few toss pillows to complete the look. You don't want to skimp on the pillows with a daybed, because they're what actually creates the back of your sitting area.
