As the crisp autumn air starts to settle in, there's nothing quite like being at home. Summers are often filled with fun activities- kids running around, gardening, weddings, picnics, and family vacations. But once all the fun settles down and the air turns cooler, we tend to turn our attention indoors, where we are naturally drawn to slow down and reflect.
Little touches of country decor can transform any space into a peaceful oasis - a place where you can truly unwind and recharge after a busy day in this crazy world. Since modern life has become emotionally draining, it is more important than ever to create a peaceful home environment for your family.
But first things first. For many of us, creating a peaceful home must start with a good old-fashioned cleaning. Followed by an intense editing of our "stuff". Stuff tends to accumulate and multiply, actually making our homes more stressful. Choosing what to give away, throw away, and store can become less taxing when you consider the joy that is on the other side. Sometimes, a newly sorted and cleaned closet can truly make your heart leap for joy when you open that door every morning!
Creating a peaceful home need not be an expensive endeavor. In fact, over spending can cause even more stress to you life and require longer work hours to compensate. Before buying more stuff this fall, try to rearrange and repurpose the pieces you already have on hand. Most of us have plenty of cute fall things already, they’re just hiding!
Let the colors of the season inspire your decor. Warm earthy neutrals paired with blazing accent colors make a classic fall combo. Using inexpensive textural elements such as walnuts, dried beans, or brown twine, plus a little imagination can lead to all sorts of unique fall displays around the house. Throw in a pumpkin or gourd for even more autumn flair. Natural elements always bring a more peaceful vibe to a room.
Making just a few seasonal changes to your decor can actually simplify your home and soothe the senses. How so? Well, when we leave out all our favorite things they almost start to disappear. We become so accustomed to seeing the same things day after day, and they loose their sweetness. But if you can divide up your decor into the most appropriate season, you can enjoy your possessions more by focusing on a few special pieces at a time. Seasonally rotating framed photos, throw blankets, or wall decor allows you to enjoy the unique beauty of your treasures and ponder the memories they evoke. Once they become commonplace to your eye, it’s time to back them up change your display for the next season.
Fill your peaceful home with the things you love. The things that bring you joy. Don’t forget to enrich all of the senses. Seeing a burning candle, or a cozy fire in the fireplace brings an instant sense of relaxation. Smelling cinnamon and vanilla can be almost a good as a hug. And soothing background music that you love can really elevate an ordinary evening at home. Don’t forget to add a cozy quilt or fluffy fleece blanket for snuggling under, and maybe some cookies for nibbling?
Creating a peaceful home for yourself and your loved ones is not a frivolous thing. Consider it an act of love for your dearest ones, because the outside world can be a very harsh place. Creating a safe and cozy retreat to nurture the spirit is essential to our health and well being. Consider it a high calling in these difficult days.
