If you happen to be of a "certain age" you know what we mean by Vintage Style Tablecloths. They were a pure joy to behold- delightfully colorful and full of juicy fruits and flowers. Sometimes very intricately patterned with scrolling borders or quirky motifs. Your Mother, or maybe Grandmother had a few tucked away in a drawer or china cabinet- and it just made you feel happy to see them.
Well sadly, they seem to be disappearing. Even just a few years ago you could find lots of them on Ebay, Etsy or Ruby Lane. While you can still find these around, they are not nearly as plentiful as they were at one time. Which is truly a shame because these sweet textile treasures are historic, and frankly good for the soul!
These tablecloths, born after the challenging times of the Great Depression and World War II, carry with them a story of resilience and optimism. Americans had endured incredible hardship and sacrificed so much in support of freedom. Finally, at long last- there was light at the end of the tunnel. So even the textiles from this era seem to burst with joy, and an almost childlike fairy tale quality. No wonder we love them so much.
Collecting and preserving these vintage treasures is a true labor of love. Identifying authentic pieces requires a keen eye and an understanding of the era's design nuances. Manufacturers like Wilendur, Simtex and Callaway are big names in this genre, and pristine original cloths are a rare find. Estate sales remain one of the best sources of vintage table linens, as many online auctions feature modern reproductions that are billed as originals.
However, quality reproductions are not without merit and practical value, when honestly represented. While a true vintage tablecloth is a joy to own, it often remains stored away due to fear of soiling. Size is another limitation that is often faced with historic linens. Most vintage tablecloths that feature the gorgeous printed designs we know and love are actually quite small in size. They were primarily designed for an intimate dinner table or dinette set, rather than a larger dining room setting. Therefore, a modern tablecloth with vintage inspired artwork can often be a more practical solution than a true antique find.
And that’s where Retro Barn can help. We love the gorgeous table linens of yesteryear, and we are committed to keeping that style alive and accessible for the modern home. We offer several lovely vintage inspired tablecloths made from cotton, and also oilcloth. And some really cute and nostalgic dish towels and aprons to add to your kitchen decor. Drape a floral-patterned tablecloth over a weathered wooden table, or use a fruity design to add a pop of color to your kitchen. The decorating possibilities are many, and the result is a space that exudes a timeless, cozy ambiance. As you incorporate these nostalgic designs into your modern home decor, you'll be creating a tribute to the enduring spirit of joy in the midst of adversity. Which is something we could all use in these crazy days!
