Sewing your own curtains can be a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. All that pesky measuring and hemming! For a super casual country look, try using a tablecloth instead. The edges are already finished and they can easily be hung with or without a curtain rod.
Check out the adorable makeshift valance shown in the farmhouse kitchen above. It couldn't be simpler- just a square tablecloth tacked onto the window. This photo of our Happy Picnic Tablecloth (courtesy of Country Sampler Magazine) illustrates the down home look perfectly. No fuss, no muss. Just good ol' county style decor with an easy charm. We've collected a few other examples of table linens used as curtains over the years. Check out a few of our favorites below ~
Napkins as Cafe Curtains
This example shows a creative use for our Red Fruit Medley Napkins, but most any cloth napkin could be similarly hung on a tension rod. Simply create a rod pocket with your sewing machine, fabric glue or fusible webbing. An even simpler way would be to buy ready made clip rings and attach the napkins without even using a rod pocket. Simple and cute! We love the diagonal napkin accenting the valance.
Napkin As Valance
Here is another really cute example using vintage style napkins. This could also work with hankies, dishtowels, etc. This shows the Marion Napkins by April Cornell, but any of our Napkins would work equally well. Just pick a pattern you love and you really can't go wrong.
Tablecloth As Valance
This example is another no-sew window treatment idea. Again, this shows a square tablecloth artfully hung on a decorative rod. The ends are draped over the rod and secured with small safety pins to keep it in place. Any of our Vintage Style Tablecloths would look great like this!
Dishtowel Curtains
This is a variation on the table linen theme- dishtowels made into cafe curtains. Same idea though. These are sewn but could easily be no-sew using clip rings. The Berries Jubilee Towel Set would be so cute as curtains! I think we'll give that a try and post them next time. Till then, keep sending us your easy window treatment ideas. We love them all!
When it comes to farmhouse style decorating, the bedroom is the best place to start. It is your sanctuary- the place where you rest and dream.
